Childersburg Alabama Attractions

Desota CavernsDesoto Caverns - 7 miles - This beautiful historic park is home to the nationally recognized onyx caverns which became the first officially recorded cave in the United States in 1796. It is located five miles east of Childersburg on Highway 76. The park has many types of tours for visitors including the Explorer Overnight, Candlelight Tours and a 1/3 mile walking tour which features the Sound and Light Show in the Great Onyx Cathedral. That room is larger than a football field and higher than a 12 story building. The mammoth onyx formations are millions of years old and many are still growing.

Kymulga Gristmill - 7 miles - The Kymulga bridge was built just before the Civil War(1861) and a gristmill was constructed there during the war. Both the bridge and the mill have been restored in recent years and are open to the public. Visitors can see corn ground with the original millstones that were imported from France. Millbrook Alabama Attractions

Mill Creek Sports Complex located at the end of Shirley Lane. The complex offers six baseball fields for use by Dixie Youth Baseball. A paved walking track encircles the park. A pavilion is available for social gatherings. 

The Village Green located at the intersection of Main Street and Grandview Road. This is a passive recreational park where many events are held. The park is encircled by a walking path. 

Robinson Springs Park is a passive park located on Monument Drive. A small gazebo is located in the park along with several tables and benches. A fountain now graces the springs. This is one of the sources of Robinson Springs, after which this area of the city is named. This is a must-see area.

Lake Wedowee - Near Roanoke, Alabama & Key West Inn

Completed in 1982 as an Alabama Power Company reservoir, Lake Wedowee has more than 272 miles of shoreline and covers over 10,000 surface acres. This popular lake offers fishing, hunting, and boating. With an annual temperature of 62 degrees F., boating is an activity enjoyed most of the year.

Considered one of the cleanest deep-water lakes east of the Mississippi River, Lake Wedowee, offers some of the best fishing in the Southeast with abundant large mouth bass, spotted bass, and crappie. The Alabama Department of Conservation lists Lake Wedowee as one of the three top fishing lakes in Alabama.

Whatever your pleasure: boating, skiing, picnicking, sailing, or swimming you'll find it at Lake Wedowee. Facilities include: public boat ramps, picnic tables, walking trails, and public restrooms.

Fort Toulouse State Park - In 1717, when this region was part of French Louisiana, the French built a fort near the strategically vital junction where the Tallapoosa and Coosa Rivers form the Alabama River. The fort was primarily a trading post where Indians exchanged fur pelts for guns and household items. There were no battles at the post as French diplomacy forged allies with the natives. The surrounding Indians, commonly referred to as Creeks, wanted peace so they could trade with both the French and British.
