Baxley Georgia Attractions
Leave your troubles behind and relax while visiting lush slash pine country. Baxley, Georgia is the Appling County seat and offers Southern Living at its finest. This small town is located in the wiregrass region of Southeastern Georgia and sits at the crossroads of Highways 341 and 1. An abundance of lakes and streams contribute much to the geography of the area and it is full of rich farm and timber lands.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the economy of this town was driven by timber rafting and naval store industries that dominated most of the state. With such humble roots, it is no surprise that this city received the designation of "A Better Hometown" in 2000 and received the "City of Excellence" title in 2004.
While visiting Baxley, be sure to take a canoe ride down the pristine Altamaha River or take in a little history at the Appling Heritage Center. Enjoy strolling along in the downtown area while shopping and experience the best of southern living!
Altamaha River
Just over 100 miles long, the Altamaha River is formed by the confluence of the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers. Critical habitat is found here for bald eagles, swallow-tailed kites and red-cockaded woodpeckers. Boat ramps and landings facilities are located in each county as well as a range of services from bait and tackle shops to picnic areas and marked hiking trails. The Altamaha River has been designated by The Nature Conservancy as one of the 75 "Last Great Places" in the world.

Lake Mayers • 8.3 miles
This lake offers fishing for largemouth bass, bream and crappie. The lake is open year round from sunrise to sunset daily. Access is available from the bank or by boat via two concrete ramps at the Public Recreation Area. Other activities included swimming, skiing and picnicking. Restrooms are available.
Moody Forest Preserve • 9.2 miles
The Moody Forest Preserve is adjacent to the Altamaha River in Appling County. It is a 4,500-acre preserve that contains the only known example of the longleaf pine-blackjack oak forest. As many as 300 to 350 acres of the property contain longleaf and slash pine trees that are 200 to 300 years old. Other special areas on the property include forests found on bluffs overlooking the floodplain, cypress-tupelo sloughs that contain trees over 600 years old, and bottomland hardwoods.
